Mohamed Sanu is one step closer to being on an NFL roster again.

Per the league’s transaction wire, the Detroit Lions hosted the free-agent wide receiver for a tryout on Monday. With questions surrounding the health status of Kenny Golladay, this should not come as a surprise to anyone. 

Along those same lines, it should be a concern of Lions’ fans. Reports are circulating he won’t be in action this week after the hip injury he suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts. The Lions started the season 0-2 while Golladay dealt with a hamstring injury. They eventually lost Colts on Sunday following his departure in the first half. To top it all off, the Lions could place him on the IR list. 

Golladay, who led the NFL in receiving touchdowns last season (11), is arguably the most important player on the roster.

Well, outside of Matthew Stafford, of course.

That brings us back to Sanu. After all, with Golladay potentially out of action, the Lions will need to add depth to the wide receiver position. The San Francisco 49ers cut Sanu early last month. While the veteran wideout hasn’t seen much action this season, he could be the saving grace for a Lions team with playoff aspirations. However, it’ll come down to what team officials see from him in the tryout mentioned above. 

Mohamed Sanu needs to hop in the DeLorean. 

If Mohamed Sanu wants to be a part of the Lions roster, he’ll need to have a short memory. Honestly, he’ll need to call Marty McFly to see if he can take the DeLorean for a spin and go back to his 2018 form. While a part of an Atlanta Falcons receiving core featuring Julio Jones, Sanu finished the 2018 season with 66 catches for 838 and four touchdowns.

Lions head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn are trying to win now, not later. With playoffs on their mind, both will need that Mohamed Sanu to show up and force the Lions to offer him a deal.
