Despite occasional lapses, this game stood out as potentially the Lions’ first fully rounded display of complementary football this season.

1st Quarter: Lions Set the Offensive Tone

Despite the Broncos forcing a punt on three straight first-quarter drives, this move signaled a strategic shift for the Lions.

Denver’s offense initially found rhythm with a 40-yard pass from Russell Wilson to Jerry Jeudy. However, the Lions’ defense quickly turned the tide. Iffy Melifonwu’s blitz on Wilson forced a critical fumble, with Isaiah Buggs returning it 33 yards. This play not only halted the Broncos’ momentum but also demonstrated the Lions’ defensive resilience. The quarter concluded with both teams locked in a tense 0-0 standoff, with the Lions positioned at their own 48.

2nd Quarter: It All Starts to Click

The Lions’ strategic shift to a run-focused approach at the end of the first quarter yielded results early in the second. Jared Goff skillfully managed play-action, connecting with Josh Reynolds for a 21-yard gain to kick things off. A creatively designed play saw Goff find LaPorta, who showcased his agility and strength, breaking tackles to score the game’s first touchdown.

The Broncos opened aggressively, aided by Lions penalties, including a crucial pass interference call on Alex Anzalone. Wilson’s connection with Lil’Jordan Humphrey for a touchdown, though controversial, narrowed the gap. The Detroit Lions responded with a strong drive led by Gibbs’ dynamic running, culminating in Goff’s touchdown pass to LaPorta. The defense, despite allowing the Broncos to move the ball down the field, held firm near the goal line, restricting the Broncos to a field goal. The quarter ended with the Lions in possession, maintaining a comfortable 28-10 lead.

4th Quarter: Sealing the Victory

The Lions intensified their running game in the fourth quarter, with Montgomery and Gibbs carving through the Broncos’ defense. Gibbs’ 12-yard touchdown showcased his strength and agility (and willingness to lower his shoulder to finish off runs). While the defense forced a punt, a rare subpar offensive drive by the Lions resulted in a punt after Goff was sacked. However, they soon regained composure, with Goff connecting with LaPorta for the rookie’s third touchdown of the game. This score effectively sealed the Lions’ emphatic victory.
