University of Michigan running back Isaiah Gash has formally announced his retirement from the game of football via his Tiktok account. Gash, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship, was about to enter his senior season with the team.
The retirement, however, does not come because of traditional injury concerns. It was due to a career-ending cartilage transplant surgery, the second of Gash’s young career.
Career
In 2020, Gash was a freshman and did not see any game action. In 2021, He also did not see much game action, but he recorded six carries for 17 yards.
His 2022 season was somewhat of his breakout. As a junior, Gash was a larger part of the offense, recording 19 carries for 101 yards and also caught 3 passes for 24 yards. Gash was also a large part of the special team’s room, helping on punt returns as well.
Thank you, Isaiah Gash ❤️

Entering this season, Jim Harbaugh had announced that Gash was officially on scholarship and no longer a walk-on. It seemed all of Gash’s hard work and improvements had paid off, and Gash was ready to get to work in 2023 and improve on the impactful 2022 campaign he had.
Impact
On the field, it is no denying how hard it is to earn a scholarship to play football; at the division one level, especially at Michigan, the winningest program in college football history. The fact that Gash accomplished that is a victory in itself.
With a running back room already consisting of Heisman candidate Blake Corum and unbelievably talented Donovan Edwards the past 2 seasons and because of his walk-on status, Gash was limited in what he was able to do.
Off the field, Gash earned all big ten academic honors in 2021 and was known as a hard worker and great teammate. He will be missed by the Michigan football team and community. I wish Gash the best of recovery and a great successful future.
