Taylor Lewan, the former Michigan football standout and offensive lineman, has been released by the Tennessee Titans. He has been with the team for nine seasons. This move comes as part of a series of salary-slashing moves by the Titans, who aim to get under the salary cap. Lewan was set to enter the fifth and final year of his $80 million contract.

Benchmark Contract for an Offensive Lineman

When Taylor Lewan signed his $80 million contract with the Tennessee Titans in 2018, it was the highest-ever contract for an offensive lineman in NFL history. The five-year deal included $50 million in guaranteed money and a $15 million signing bonus. This contract made Lewan one of the highest-paid players in the league, and it reflected his impressive skill set as a left tackle. Certainly, Lewan’s contributions to the Titans were recognized, and his contract served as a benchmark for future NFL contracts for offensive linemen.

Accomplishments on and off the Field

Lewan was the longest-tenured player on the Titans, having spent his entire career with the team after being drafted No. 11 overall in 2014. He was a three-time Pro Bowler and has played in 107 NFL games. Unfortunately, injuries have plagued him in recent seasons. Lewan missed 11 games in 2020 with a torn ACL and then missed the final 15 games of the 2021 season after tearing his ACL in Week 2. Moreover, he has played in just 20 games over the past three seasons. Despite this, Lewan still feels that he has a lot to offer to the NFL.

Lewan’s love for football and commitment to the game is evident in his accomplishments in Ann Arbor. Lewan played in 50 games and made 48 starts across four seasons. He was a two-time All-American, three-time first-team All Big Ten selection. and two-time Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Looking Ahead

Lewan’s departure from the Titans may be a blessing in disguise for the former Michigan star. In a recent podcast, “Bussin’ with the Boys.” Lewan stated that he felt his release from the Titans was imminent. Additionally, he is preparing to weigh the pros and cons of playing football. Lewan is now a free agent, and there are several NFL teams that could benefit from his experience.
