The NBA world is reacting to the Saddiq Bey rumors reported by Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. That the Detroit Pistons have “taken early calls” on the third year player.

So what does any of it mean? Not much, yet. All that has to happen for this report to be true, is for another team’s GM to call and ask is Bey available. That would constitute a valid report.

But what if it is true, and the reports are just a glimpse into the direction Troy Weaver wants to take this team. The reports further state that the Pistons entertaining these calls for Bey now, is “a change in behavior from recent trade windows.”

That part honestly made my ears perk up just a bit. Because it shows more that Troy Reaper doesn’t wait for anyone. He, as he once said, moves at his own pace. I see the same methodical beast in Weaver that I see in Cade Cunningham. Just let those guys cook.

I am curious to see what the Pistons could get in a Bey deal. He’s arguably more value than it took to get Marvin Bagley. I’m not advocating for Saddiq Bey to be traded, though, nearly interested in how the league views him.

Core Four or Fore?

I see Bey still being part of the “core four” as Troy Weaver dubbed his first Pistons’ draft class. It once featured Killian Hayes, Isaiah Stewart, Saddiq Bey and Saben Lee.

Today? That lineup is Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren and a fight between Isaiah Stewart and Saddiq Bey.

Ultimately I believe that Bojan, and not Saddiq Bey, should be the one involved in a trade, if there is one at all. Despite Saddiq Bey’s early season struggles, he may benefit from starting when the team is at full strength.

They’ve been without their the use of all three of their bigs for a game except ten-minutes before Isaiah Stewart’s injury.

When Stewart gets healthy, the most balanced lineup offensively and defensively consists of: Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Saddiq Bey, Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren.

Bojan Bogdanovic is instant offense and can get hot faster than Saddiq Bey. It would be easier to go to the bench for Bogey, and know the offense you will get. Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren offense doesn’t look as smooth when Bogdanovic is the primary ball handler. A bit of tunnel vision can set in, which he usually offsets by scoring, but it leaves other players without attempts to find rhythm.

This is what I believe truly plagued Bey, and what I believe may be effecting Ivey.

One thing it seems we all forget at times… this is a new team with more than 5 starter worthy players. They need at least half a season to build chemistry and learn how they like to play.

Final Word

Rod Beard (Detroit News) via the Woodward Pistons Podcast stated he wouldn’t be surprised if there were a couple trades this season. That was before the Bojan acquisition. Could there be more on the way? With Troy Weaver, you can never rest. Given his track record of prior trades, if Bey does find his way in a trade deal, consider it won by Weaver.
