It’s obvious the Detroit Lions’ defense has been a severe issue in their 1-6 start to the season. The team has made several “adjustments,” and earlier this week even fired defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant. Amidst all the changes, Aaron Glenn says we should expect to see Jerry Jacobs get some defensive snaps this week.

Jacobs was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia before heading to Arkansas for college. He played football at both Arkansas State and Arkansas. In his second year at Arkansas State, he suffered a season-ending ACL tear after just four games. The following season he transferred to Arkansas where he played in four games before opting out of the remaining six games as he declared for the 2021 NFL Draft. His college career consisted of 108 total tackles and 8 interceptions.

On May 1st, 2021, Jacobs signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent. He started in nine games as a rookie last season before suffering a torn ACL in December. In his 13 games played in 2021, he recorded 31 total tackles, three TFLs, and seven pass defenses.

The corner started off the 2022 season on Reserve/PUP and was activated on October 22nd. Jacobs has played in just one defensive snap since his return from the injury. Dan Campbell spoke after the game on Sunday saying they were ready for Jacobs but didn’t want to rush into anything.

“Oh yeah, we’re going to be looking at Jerry. We’ll be looking at everybody. We’ll be looking at everybody. We want to make sure Jerry is ready to go and then let him compete and see where he is. We still feel like last week was a step in getting him – continuing to get his confidence back, getting his legs under him, and that started with (special) teams and he got a little bit more in this department. And once we feel like, OK, he’s right, he can take the load, and he competitively is better than one of the other guys, then he’s going to get his chance.”

The Lions currently rank last in the NFL in points and yards allowed per game. Between consistent mental errors and a lack of execution, the defense hasn’t stood a chance. On Monday, following the dismissal of Aubrey Pleasant, Coach Campbell says he’s not asking for much.

“I just want to see us all on the same page, and if we’re going to get beat, it’s because we’re – maybe we’re getting outrun or we’re not quite in phase, but at least we’re kind of there. We’ve got to cut our mentals in half.”
